Digital Visibility and Operational Readiness for Yard Transformation
15.07.2026
Business Challenge
A leading grocery retailer faced growing complexity in managing high-volume yard operations within a constrained facility footprint. Existing operations relied heavily on manual scheduling, paper-based processes, and disconnected workflows, limiting visibility and creating operational inefficiencies.
To support the transition to a modern Yard Management System (YMS), the organization sought to replace manual processes with a real-time, system-driven operation supported by tablets, kiosks, and integrated digital workflows. However, the implementation introduced significant challenges. Seamless integration was required between the new YMS and existing warehouse, transportation, and enterprise systems to ensure accurate, synchronized data across operations. Meanwhile, the organization needed to understand and map complex physical and information flows throughout the yard to support the new operating model.
Beyond the technology itself, operational readiness emerged as a critical success factor. Infrastructure requirements, workforce adoption, training needs, and go-live exceptions all created potential barriers to successful deployment. The retailer needed a partner capable of coordinating across technology, operations, and people to help bring the transformation to life.
Miebach provided end-to-end implementation support focused on aligning systems, processes, infrastructure, and users around a common operating model.
The team mapped both operational and IT processes to ensure truck appointments, purchase orders, and yard management data were accurately reflected across connected systems. Functional and technical specifications were developed to support yard flows, kiosk operations, tablet deployment, and network infrastructure requirements prior to implementation.
To prepare the organization for adoption, Miebach created comprehensive training materials, user guides, and quick-reference tools in both English and Spanish. These resources supported user simulations, system validation activities, and operational readiness efforts ahead of go-live. Miebach also simulated yard operations within a sandbox environment, allowing users to build familiarity with the system while helping identify and address potential issues before deployment.
Throughout the engagement, Miebach coordinated closely with the client and system integrators through structured project management and weekly alignment meetings. Action tracking, issue management, and timeline oversight helped maintain accountability across stakeholders to support on-time delivery.
As the project progressed into deployment, Miebach continued refining training materials onsite while providing direct coaching and support to end users, helping bridge the gap between system implementation and day-to-day operational execution.
“The Miebach team were great to work with on this project. They were extremely thorough and helped us navigate through a complex process to evaluate and select a YMS vendor. They were also instrumental during the implementation - on the ground with us every step of the way - figuratively and literally! Miebach has been a great partner through the years and the YMS project was another shining example of why we continue to partner with Miebach on every major supply chain project.”

Results and Benefits
The project established the foundation for a real-time yard operation capable of supporting a high volume of inbound and outbound activity through digital processes rather than manual, paper-based workflows.
By aligning system integrations, operational processes, infrastructure requirements, and workforce readiness activities, the organization entered deployment with a clearer path toward consistent yard visibility and coordinated decision-making across transportation, warehouse, and yard operations. The implementation also created a standardized approach to trailer management, appointment processing, and status tracking, improving the accuracy and availability of operational information across the business.
The introduction of tablet- and kiosk-enabled workflows positioned the organization to reduce reliance on manual data entry while improving operational consistency and user accessibility. Bilingual training materials and direct end-user coaching helped support workforce adoption and prepare teams for long-term success within the new operating environment.
Most importantly, the retailer established the operational and technical foundations required to manage their high-volume yard activity through a connected, system-driven process. With more than 1,200 truck movements occurring each day, improvements in visibility, data accuracy, process standardization, and user adoption create opportunities to support more efficient yard operations, strengthen coordination across stakeholders, and enable future enhancements as the organization continues to mature its yard management capabilities.
Key Outcomes:
✔ Integrated YMS with enterprise systems
✔ Enabled real-time yard visibility
✔ Standardized trailer management
✔ Digitized manual yard workflows
✔ Prepared workforce through bilingual training
✔ Supported successful operational readiness
